This article originally appeared in the Spring 2006 issue of the Federation News (Volume 12 Number 2).

This article is all about the village of McCook, Illinois, a predominantly industrial suburb located along Route 66 in Cook County between Lyons, Hodgkins, and Countryside. There is a section of Route 66 (Joliet Road) that has been closed to traffic since May 1998 due to serious damage to the roadbed.

In September 2001, the Illinois Department of Transportation filed suit in Cook County Circuit Court alleging that the quarrying activities of Vulcan Materials Corporation on either side of the highway had caused the damage. I was retained by lawyers for IDOT in October 2005 to provide expert testimony on the historic importance of Route 66 and that specific stretch of road in McCook. This article is an outgrowth of the research I did in preparation for my deposition and testimony.

Inevitably, there are times when mistakes happen when publishing any book or periodical, and one layout problem is evident in this article. There is a photograph of the closed section of Route 66–Joliet Road–on the bottom left of page 3 of the article (Fed News page 13). The photo is mistakenly repeated on the top left of page 4 (Fed News page 14). The caption on page 4 is for the photo that was supposed to be there–a photo of the quarry now located at the southwest corner of East Avenue and Joliet Road. The missing photo is shown above–for a larger view click here
