Crocodile Lile has logged many, many miles with his Harley on America’s highways and byways. He is past President of the Old Route 66 Association of Texas and is currently working with the Route 66 Pulse and the National Route 66 Alliance. Check out his website for road stories and take a look at his custom-built clocks made with Harley Davidson motor cycle tires. The site also features many other quality items to enhance the biking experience. Historic66.com is dedicated to provide free information for those who want to learn more about Route 66. It features a turn-by-turn road description. The forum is available for discussions by the visitors of this site. There’s a slide-show, with pictures from the the site owner’s trip down Route 66 in 1994. This site is maintained by Swa Frantzen, and it was the source of my directions for MY first trip on the Mother Road in 2000! As Mr. Frantzen says, “old Route 66 is not indicated on maps nowadays; any serious traveller of U.S. Highway 66 needs a detailed map and guide before hitting the road.” This site is a great source for exactly what is needed. The National Historic Route 66 Federation is the worldwide, nonprofit organization dedicated to directing the public’s attention to the importance of U. S. Highway Route 66 in America’s cultural heritage and acquiring the federal, state and private support necessary to preserve the historic landmarks and revitalize the economies of communities along the entire 2,400-mile stretch of road. The Federation accomplishes these goals through public education, advocacy and membership activities. Public outreach strategies include publication of the quarterly magazine Federation News, the Adopt-A-Hundred Preservation Program, a worldwide web site, the Route 66 Dining and Lodging Guide, the EZ 66 GUIDE For Travelers, special events and assistance to the media, authors, learning institutions and production companies. Route 66 News is a clearinghouse of news and events along historic Route 66, the Mother Road. The website is maintained by Ron Warnick, a 66 enthusiast who lives in the Tulsa area where he is involved in the Oklahoma Route 66 Association and hold memberships in several other state Route 66 organizations. It has become the best resource for keeping up with the Mother Road today. Route 66 University is the online institution of higher learning destined to become the premier source of online information for America’s most famous highway, variously called the Mother Road, Main Street of America, Route 66, and U.S. 66. This website is maintained by Drew Knowles, who wrote the Route 66 Adventure Handbook, now in its third edition. Route 66 Web & Atlas Steffan Joppich maintains this marvelous on-line atlas to the Mother Road. As Steffan says on the home page, “The information contained in this web is based on years of field studies and lot of work done by courtesy of enthusiasts like me – but there are still some question marks. My issue was, to map all the known alignments of ‘US66′ including it’s predessors like ‘Pontiac Trail’ (POT), ‘Ozark Trail’ (OZT), old ‘Postal Routes’ (OPR), ‘Santa Fe/Pecos Trail’ (SFT), ‘National Old Trails’ (NOT).” If your interest in the highway is reaching the level of obsession, then this is the website for you!
